This is an easy bread to make aboard a boat as it does not require the usual kneading like some bread. It is a good all around white bread great for sandwiches or as a side for stews and soup. This is a really good bread for the first time cook or seasoned chef.


2 (1/4 ounce) package active dry yeast (One package = 2 1/4 teaspoons)
2 3/4 cups water
6 1/2 cups flour
3 tablespoons sugar
3 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons shortening, softened


1. Dissolve yeast in hot water, in a large bowl.
2. Add half the flour, and the sugar, salt, and shortening.
3. Blend at low speed, then beat 2 minutes at med speed.
4. Mix in remaining flour by hand.
5. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes.
6. Stir the batter hard for 30 seconds.
7. Spread into 2, 8 in greased loaf pans (batter will be sticky).
8. Let rise until doubled, about 20 minutes.
9. Bake at 325 for about 45 minutes, until golden brown and done.
